Are You Ready for the First Day? Create Memories with These Fun Traditions!

Ultimate Back to School Success Kit, MilKids Ed, Meg Flanagan, education advocate, military families

You’ve finished the back to school shopping. The kids have squeaky clean shoes and brand new clothes. Your coffee is even primed for the morning.

And yet…you’re a little nervous to take this next step. For your kids to get another year older and bigger.

Make it fun with these new traditions!

Back to School Breakfast

Make the morning festive with a yummy breakfast treat. Tomorrow you can go back to sensible, healthy breakfasts.

Today, treat yourselves with all the breakfast treats.

If you have time, make fancy pancakes. I love these brownie batter pancakes from Chocolate Covered Katie. As a bonus, they are mostly healthy. Or go old school with chocolate chip or fruit covered pancakes.

If your morning is sure to be rushed, whip up something that sets or cooks overnight. We love overnight monkey bread! It’s easy cinnamony goodness that oozes with sweetness. Or pump up the sweet factor with a yummy French toast bake from the Pioneer Woman.

Go classic with bacon, eggs, toast, and fruit.

Back to Books

Get your kids ready to go back to school with a little bit of fun, too. Gift your children a brand new book on the first day of school.

You can pick something that matches their grade, like Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. Or grab the next book in their favorite series. A back to school book is also the perfect time to introduce a brand new series or author.

Pick up the hardcover or library-quality edition, then leave a sweet message on the inside. Hold onto the books through the years. When your child graduates from high school or college, they will have a nice set of books to treasure or even pass down to the next generation.

Something New

Mark the day with a small something for school. It could be as simple as a new pencil case or fancy eraser. Go bigger, like a snazzy water bottle or new bento box.

Having something new in their backpack as they climb on the bus will make the day extra special.

Post School Pizza

What kid doesn’t like pizza? After school is over for the day, surprise your kids with pizza.

You could make it easy for yourself and pick up some pies from your local favorite. Get a few different small pizzas with different toppings, then mix and match.

Get fancy at home with DIY pizzas. Grab pre-made crust from the store along with your favorite toppings. Set everyone up with their own pizza and let them go to town.

Make the celebration even bigger by inviting a few friends over to join the fun.

School Sundaes

After your children are full of pizza, let them go nuts with a little ice cream. Pick up several pints in different flavors or a quNeopolitanpolitan. With a can of whip cream, sprinkles, and a jar of hot fudge, you are all set up for a sundae bar.

Dish up the ice cream and then let the kids top their own.

You could have your DIY sundaes right after the first day or have a bigger party with some friends on the first Friday.

Movie Night

It’s probably been a rough week at school, so that first Friday is a great time to really kick back.

If you decide to skip the DIY sundaes (or even if you don’t skip them), it’s the perfect time for a movie! Pull out some old favorite or pick up some of the newer releases. Your family can relax together, eating your ice cream or snacking on popcorn.

What are your favorite back to school traditions? How do you make it funner? Share your tips in the comments!
