We’ve all seen kids meltdown, in public, in the classroom or at home. They’re overwhelmed with big emotions and just aren’t sure where to turn or what to do. Ellie and Her Emotional Dragons by Dr. Joseph Goodrich is a great picture book to help guide children to help handle emotions.
Ellie is handling a lot of changes in her life, with a new home and a dad who is often away. She’s trying to make new friends and feel secure in her new surroundings.
As she encounters different strong emotions, one of her emotional dragons appears to help coach her to a successful resolution or celebration.
I really love this book – and so do my kids! My daughter grabs this book regularly. And when she’s tackling a big feeling, she’ll even tell me what dragon friend is helping her.
This book is extra special to us because Dr. Goodrich is also a USMC pilot! As a military family, I love finding cool connections between my professional calling and our military life. Dr. Goodrich holds multiple degrees in education. This background makes him uniquely qualified to speak as both a military dad and a compassionate educator.
In addition to a thoughtfully written text, Ellie features colorful illustrations. My daughter loves looking for all the little details in every picture. Whenever a new dragon pops out to help Ellie, she shouts out the emotion it represents.
Ellie and her dragons are a great addition to your library. This book is perfect for all kids, even if they’re not actively struggling with emotional regulation. Reading Ellie has already helped my daughter find a better balance and outlet for her emotions. I’ve noticed that she’s already starting to verbalize more about her emotions!
